Considering Homeschooling
For whatever reason, you’re considering homeschooling. Maybe you or your child aren’t ready to go headlong into the public or private school system. Or maybe you’ve been there and decided there has to be a better way. I believe there is. It’s homeschooling.
The questions are almost always the same. Is it legal and can I do it. The answer to both questions is yes. The legalities vary from state to state, but it is legal everywhere in the US. And regardless of your personality, yes, you can do it.
I often here people say that they don’t have the patients or the personal academic ability to do it them selves. To these people I say this. If you want the best for your child, you will do what is best. And if you believe homeschooling is best, you’ll figure out how to do it. Just like if you had a diabetic child that had to have daily injections, even if you were phobic of needles, you would take a deep breathe and head forward into the scary and unknown. You have the ability to educate your child just like you taught them to speak, go potty, and eat.
So here is where you start. Check out you local laws. DO NOT call your local school district; they are more often than not uninformed or misinformed. Homeschooling is the competition. It takes money from there district if you don’t enroll your child, and private schools are the same way. They only make money if you enroll your child. Instead start with the The Home School Legal Defense Fund. This is a national organization dedicated to educating people on homeschool legalities and protecting the rights of those same people. They can tell you the laws of your state and let you know where to go if you need to register or test you child during your homeschooling.
Now that you know you can legally homeschool your child, how do you do it correctly? This is a sometimes long and slow process. But don’t be intimidated too much. You know so much more educating your child than you even know you do. Does you child do well under pressure? Does he do well sitting for a long period of time? Or does your child do best elbow deep in the dirt? These are all questions that you probably know the answer to without much thought, but they give great insight to how your child learns best.
Public and private school serve a great purpose in society. But the new technology, wide curriculum availability, and the growing support of homeschooling have made it an option for anyone who either wants to do it or who believe they should do it, even if they are terrified! Take a deep breathe, and get ready to start something that will one day be as much a part of your life as fixing dinner.
